I hired Sam Scofield to design a modern cabin with efficient use of space and the potential to be off-the-grid. As an initial matter, he is quite knowledgeable of both design and construction, and was able to anticipate and modify a number of design features that were likely cause complications during construction. He also has deep experience with the northeastern climate, and suggested several helpful design accommodations for the cold winters and warm summers we experience here. The design itself was quite thoughtful, and captured exactly what I imagined for the cabin. I was impressed with his work on the details, like window size and placement, as well as his arrangement of the floor plan (which was different than I had originally envisioned). The process was iterative and he was always receptive to my ideas (although some were quite misguided and I benefited from Sam’s foresight).
